FB Marketplace Finds: Swan Style

I picked up my latest Facebook Marketplace find from the Whisperwood Townhomes in St. Petersburg, FL. My contact for this purchase informed me that she was managing the sale for a friend and fellow townhome dweller who did not own a cell phone - always fun.

For a mere $40, I scored a unique swan-shaped coffee table with a grey (smoked?) glass top.

Once the table was loaded in the back of my car, the seller mentioned “it made it all the way from Key West.” It’s fun to think about how many ways this conversation could have splintered, but I was unable to pry further. For now, the table will maintain it’s Key West mystique.

The grey glass was not photographed in the FB Marketplace listing, so I mistakenly assumed it was paired with a regular, clear glass top - a reminder to always ask.

After a little research, I discovered the exact same table base with different glass listed on 1stDibs for $1,300. Its Brooklyn-based seller deemed the table “mid-century” because of the top’s unique shape. I can neither confirm nor deny this and am wondering which piece of glass, if any, is original. Is mine a more modern addition to the piece? Unclear. Either way, I love the way the 1stDibs glass emphasizes the detailed base.

I credit Natalie Papier of Home Ec. with sparking my interest for all things swan. This summer, she instagrammed a photo of her house in Charlotte that features an “80’s style swan table” she revived with a coat of black paint. Immediately, I took to the FB Marketplace search bar with groundbreaking keywords like “vintage” and “vintage swan.” This strategy proved ineffective, so I filed the inspiration away for later. Ultimately, Natalie’s post was the catalyst for my search. And now, four months later, I have my very own swan style table.
